Rasmussen College Granted Programmatic Accreditation for Their Medical Assisting Progam

As the Program Coordinator for the Medical Assisting Program at the Wausau Campus of Rasmussen College, it is my pleasure to announce that we were granted Programmatic Accreditation by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) on August 15, 2011.

We were granted approval for programmatic accreditation for our Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, and for our Medical Assisting Diploma Degree.  This means that our Medical Assisting graduates will be able to sit for the coveted CMA(AAMA) National Examination at the completion of their programs.  This certification examination is conducted by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), and grants the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credentialing once a student has successfully passed it.  If a person has the CMA(AAMA) credentials, that means he or she has graduated from a school that not only has regional accreditation, but the specific program on that particular campus is also accredited.  In today’s litigious society, credentialing is becoming more and more important in the health field, and the AAMA has set high standards for accredited programs and continuing education for its members.

Accreditation is very important in today’s education landscape.  It not only validates the school’s program and class room rigor, but also provides a measuring tool for employers who hire graduates from the educational facility.  Rasmussen College, as an institution, has enjoyed Regional Accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) for years.  In fact, we were granted a 10 year accreditation, which is the longest time a school can go without an interim site visit by the accrediting board.  And now, we have the much sought after Programmatic Accreditation specific for our Medical Assisting Program.  This means that ABHES found our program at the Wausau Campus to meet and/or exceed educational expectations.  They focused on curriculum, quality of our externship sites, student enrollment, student satisfaction, classroom rigor, skills development, facility environment, and whether we had state-of-the-art equipment in our labs and campus for our students.

The process was lengthy and intense, involving faculty, students, and our Medical Assisting Advisory Board.  At the end of the two day site visit, the team told us they were very impressed with the fact that the whole campus pulled together to make this happen.  Not just faculty; not just Corporate Administration, but every person on our campus, including students who were not even in the Medical Assisting Program.  They were especially impressed with the professionalism and dedication of those students who were.  This accreditation is all about them and their drive to be the best they can.

The quality of education has always been our top priority at Rasmussen College, and the Medical Assisting Program standards are set very high.  Having this accreditation granted to us has just made all of the hard work and personal dedication all of us bring to the program worth everything.  Our students are looking forward to graduating with pride, and taking their places in the exceptional health care community we have in the general Wausau area.
