Northcentral Technical College’s (NTC) Business and Industry Solutions (BIS) division has had the opportunity to work with several manufacturers in the NTC district on their training and professional development needs of their employees.

The economy has had a heavy impact on the manufacturing community in our region and the chance to improve worker skills needed to be balanced with running the business.  This is where NTC was able to step up and help the employers.  Through a statewide grant opportunity called the Workforce Advancement Training (WAT) Grants, the college was able to provide a high level of training and skill development to incumbent workers with a large portion of the costs offset by the WAT grants.  This value of training to the employer, allowed each organization to continually develop the skills and abilities of their staff while keeping operations moving along and in some cases, improve business.

Over the past couple years, NTC has been involved in over 20 WAT grants awarded to companies in Wausau, Weston, Medford, Merrill, Mosinee Antigo and Phillips.  The training was provided by qualified and skilled NTC facilitators and instructors in a wide range of areas including but not limited to; Welding, Machine Tool, Lean Systems, Microsoft Excel, Project Management, Leadership, Supervision, Mechanical Design, Critical Core Manufacturing Skills, Safety, Blueprint reading and Fluid Power systems to name a few.

The instruction would take place at the worksite unless specific software or equipment was required, in which case the participants would travel to the nearest NTC campus for the scheduled training.  This model provided the employees with the skills necessary in their positions while incorporating specific content elements from their facility, work-flow, operations into the training to make it very “practical” for each of them.

Individuals representing all aspects of an organization have been involved in the training including President’s/CEO’s, plant managers, directors, floor leaders, middle managers, and hourly employees.

Employer response to the WAT grants training programs have been outstanding.  Several employers have asked for continued opportunities to work with NTC on future projects and some grant funded projects have spun off to new topic areas, all with the intent of providing solutions to help the business grow.

This year NTC has partnered with five businesses to provide on-site customized training solutions to their workforce in areas such as; leadership, communication, certificate in Supervision, machine tool, PLC robotics, blueprint reading and MS office suite.

WAT grant training opportunities are still available for both large and small businesses.  Contact NTC at 715.803.1121 to discover solutions designed to enhance employee performance and produce results.
